Nice blog Astonomer! Hanoi's Chinatown used to be in the area of the old quarter, around Ta Hien St. But most (90%) of the ethnic Chinese who lived in Hanoi had either gone back to China or became boat people during the Sino-Vietnamese War of 1979. What left of it had been assimilated by the Vietnamese.

Hhmm. Could of sworn I stayed at a place called Chinatown by travel books and the local restaurateurs in Hanoi in 1996. Whatever happened to it?

Thanks Foodhoe,
You should definitely visit all of Vietnam--there's so much to see and eat here!

Teddy - Thanks, I'll definitely have to check that place out. My eating schedule for my next trip to Hanoi is already getting jam packed--I can't wait.

Wandering - That totally makes sense. It hadn't occurred to me to wonder why there is no Chinatown in Hanoi. I haven't done nearly enough eating in Cho Lon since we've been living in Saigon. It's a little out of the way for me, but it'll be worth the excursion.

Bad luck on the My Van Than -- used to eat at those average old quarter joints until I discovered the place on Hang Phen (west side of the Old Quarter) which is the bees knees.

Mr Sticky Rice wrote it up -- VIR/ TIMEOUT link here: http://www.vir.com.vn/Client/TimeOut/index.asp?url=content.asp&doc=14876

I even found a not particularly good youtube video of it, but should help you recognise it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oacHrHi6rc

I'm terrified of the woman who runs the place. Old school dragon lady. But man does she make a mean bowl of noodles.
