Loco Mocos can be found on cafe food menus all over the place here in Japan. They don`t use half as much gravy as the one pictured here and the hamburger patty is more like meatloaf than hamburger. Pretty tasty!

foodhoe - You're totally right about the gravy and patty. With so few ingredients, it's important to nail each one in this dish. Spam musubi with kimchi? That sounds like something I'd definitely dig.

Jo - You might feel awful afterward, but it's totally doable ;-)

Rivers - Even though I knew it my heart of hearts that a legit loco moco wouldn't be very good, it was the right thing to do before trying the Animal-tastic version.

Pam - DO try Aloha Food Factory. You're gonna love the woman who runs the joint. Betty's her name and hospitality's her game.

Kat - You must come with us to King's Hawaiian! Show us the ropes, man.

I've never liked Loco Moco. I applaud your efforts to try the original version before the Animal version.

I have no doubt the Animal version is fabu!

your post sounded so much more interesting than this programming bug I'm looking at. after reading Kirk's posts at mmm-yoso I tried it once and was very disappointed. But I think that good gravy and a well cooked burger are key... am interested to hear about a high-end version! p.s. I like spam musubi with kimchi
