Poogan’s Porch – Charleston

Another day in Charleston, another splendid meal set in a gorgeous and historic house. This is the life…

Our first meal of the day took us to Poogan’s Porch for a proper Lowcountry brunch, which I admit resembles a Lowcountry dinner, but with noticeably more poached eggs.

Opened in 1976 and set in a grand 19th century Victorian home, Poogan’s Porch is one of Charleston’s oldest restaurants. The restaurant is named after a dog named Poogan, the pet pooch of the building’s former owners before it was converted to a restaurant.

Chef and managing partner Daniel Doyle has been in the kitchen since 2007. Like all of the best restaurants in town, Poogan’s prides itself on sourcing proteins and produce locally from Charleston and its surrounding areas.

Complimentary biscuits, warm, flaky, and fresh from the oven, are a sure way to my heart. Whipped butter, too. Of all the biscuits I had the pleasure of devouring while in town, these golden pucks were my favorite.

The Astronomer and I shared the pimiento fritters with green tomato jam ($5.95) to start. Crisp on the outside and perfectly gooey-molten within, these were exquisite! The sharpness of the cheddar paired like a dream with the sweet green tomatoes.

Even though I had downed a platter of shrimp and grits less than twelve hours earlier, I couldn’t help but order it again. Poogan’s fancy, brunch-time take included blue crab gravy, bell peppers, onions, sausage, and poached eggs ($13.95). The flavors were really terrific!

The Astronomer’s buttermilk fried chicken ($12.95) with sage gravy, whipped potatoes, and collard greens matched my shrimp and grits in tastiness. The star of the plate was the gorgeous chicken, expertly fried and super-moist.

Our quintessential Charleston brunch fueled us for the quintessential Charleston carriage ride that followed. I could get used to Lowcountry livin’.

  1. That fried chicken looks AMAZING. Next time we go to South Carolina I have to make sure we visit Charleston and not just Columbia!
