Malibu Seafood – Malibu

Daytime dates with The Astronomer are a rare treat, so I packed the schedule for maximum good times. Before making our way to Malibu, we stopped into Bill’s Burgers in Van Nuys for a hearty bite. From there, we drove further west and hopped aboard a wine safari at Saddlerock Ranch. Last but not least, we headed to the coast for lunch at Malibu Seafood. Whatta day!

There are many dining options up and down the Pacific Coast Highway, but we settled on the nearly fifty-year-old Malibu Seafood for its unfussy environs and promises of expertly fried seafood.

After waiting in a sizable line and placing our order at the counter, The Astronomer and I settled into an outdoor picnic table to wait for our food.

From the “Fresh Grilled Seafood” portion of the menu, The Astronomer selected the giant squid steak ($16.95), which came with a choice of two sides; he selected the rice pilaf and coleslaw. The squid was indeed giant and steak-like, with the grill imparting a delectable smokiness. While I was expecting a bit of chewiness, every bite was pleasantly tender.

For me, a duo of delectable deep-fried morsels. The shrimp and fries answered the call for all that’s golden, well-seasoned, and crispy ($13.95). Battering fresh seafood and dunking it in hot oil isn’t rocket science by any means, but done right, it shoots tastebuds straight to the moon.

Following our meal at Malibu Seafood, we made our way toward the foothills of Altadena. With sun-soaked memories of gruffly-served patty melts, giraffes named Stanley, and baskets of crispy shrimp dancing in our heads, the drive home wasn’t too bad.
