The Mill – San Francisco

The Mill - San Francisco

We stopped in for breakfast at The Mill on our final morning in San Francisco. Toast—fancy hipster toast—was calling our names.  We couldn’t leave town before trying some.

Every slice of toast from The Mill begins with damn good bread from Josey Baker, which uses whole grain flours milled daily on-site and sourdough starter. I procured a hearty loaf of country bread ($6) to-go as a gift for my aunt who we’d be seeing later in the day.

While our trio of toasts were being made, I perked up with an espresso from FourBarrel Coffee.

First up was the cinnamon sugar toast ($4) with butter and sea salt on country bread. The Astronomer grew up eating cinnamon toast, and this gussied-up take was as delicious as it was nostalgic. The toast’s crunchy exterior gave way to spongy, sweet buttery innards. Consider The Chaplins fans of fancy toast.

In addition to fantastic bread, another reason why the toast here is so memorable has to be the butter. Each slice is treated to a generous coat of McClelland’s salted before any other toppings. Mmm…

The cream cheese toast ($5) with black pepper and sea salt on dark mountain rye was good too, although quite a bit more complex than the cinnamon-sugar one. The rye bread, savory and charred, was brightened by the cream cheese schmear.

And finally, a slice of molasses brown bread with butter, sea salt, and seasonal strawberry jam ($6). It’s hard to beat a classic pairing like toast with jam.

The family that eats fancy toast together, stays together. Or something like that…

Until next time, San Francisco!

  1. I love the coffee here but have never had the fancy toast. The surrounding neighborhood has changed so much – I couldn’t believe there was a Bi-Rite just a block down from there.

  2. Darin – Toast is a must with your coffee next time 😉 Funny that you mention how the neighborhood had changed. I don’t know what it was like before, but The Mill was the hottest place to be for the Mommy & Me set when we were there. So many families and so many dogs—it was quite the scene!
