Weekend Brunch at Love & Salt – Manhattan Beach

Weekend Brunch at Love & Salt - Manhattan Beach

Long weekends are made for beaching and brunching, and that’s exactly what we did during the recent Labor Day holiday. In the past, we’ve beached in Venice and Manhattan Beach and brunched at A-Frame and M.B. Post, respectively. This weekend, we decided to see if brunch at Love & Salt was as great as dinner. The Astronomer, June, and I were joined by my cousins Jackie and Jessica, who were visiting from The Bay.

The restaurant serves brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM. The menu includes a little bit of everything, including a few favorites from Chef Michael Fiorelli’s beloved dinner menu.

A meal at Love & Salt wouldn’t be complete without an order of the house-made English muffins ($8) served with rosemary- and sea salt-topped cultured butter. Warm and toasty, the English muffins were a definite crowd-pleaser.

Fishwives – Pasadena

Fishwives - Pasadena

Last Saturday night goes down as one of the best in recent memory. After bidding our little lady a good night, The Astronomer and I dined at newly-opened Fishwives before seeing Green Day at the Rose Bowl. What could be better than digging in to New England-style seafood before rocking out to my favorite band in the world with my favorite person in the world? Not much.

Fishwives has barely been open for two weeks. However, strong word-of-mouth among the local set meant that the dining room was packed at 5 PM, with only bar seating available for walk-ins.

According to the restaurant’s website, a ‘fishwife’ is a “a coarse-mannered woman who is prone to shouting” or “a woman who sells fish.” From what I gather, the restaurant was named after the owner’s great grandmother.

Complimentary bread and butter landed on the table while we were perusing the menu.

L.A. County Fair 2017: Chicken in the Waffle on a Stick Edition

L.A. County Fair 2017 #DaretoFair

One of The Astronomer’s and my favorite summer traditions is attending the L.A. County Fair (see previous shenanigans: here, here, and here). It’s almost always unreasonably hot at this time of year, especially in Pomona, but the draw of deep-fried foods on a stick and wholesome fun can never be passed up.

We were excited to introduce June to the festivities this year. At the tender age of two and three-quarters, she was ready to take in all the action. Well, at least all the action until nap time.

The funny thing, of many funny things, about raising June is seeing what she gravitates toward. There was something about the cut-out photo ops scattered throughout the Fairplex that really moved her. We took photos at each and every one we encountered.
