I wasn’t sure what to expect when I ordered the warm medjool dates at a recent dinner at Hatchet Hall. Soon after drinks arrived, a small pink dish filled with glistening dates was set on the table. Sprinkled with sea salt and sitting in a puddle of brown butter and vinegar, the sticky dates hit all the right sweet, savory, and rich notes, and tasted even better paired with a well-made Old Fashioned.
The strong, no-nonsense cocktail reeled in the dates’ intrinsic sweetness, creating a harmonious balance that set the tone for the rest of the feast, which included two kinds of buttery bread, a crisp kale Caesar salad, grilled pork, and an Eton mess to finish.
