Ivan Ramen – New York City

At the pace I’m writing these days, I’ll be posting my 2015 “Year in Delicious” retrospective sometime in early spring. So it goes… Onward!

Ivan Ramen - New York City

Following Chop Stick Nation, The Astronomer, June, and I drove to New York City for our first official family vacation. Traveling with June, 10 months old at the time, was pretty great because she was starting to take in her surroundings and appreciate little adventures, especially culinary ones.

For our first meal in the city, we headed to Ivan Ramen for a late lunch. Ivan Orkin, a self-described “Jewish kid from Long Island,” made a name for himself in Japan prior to opening two outlets in New York. We had the restaurant all to ourselves at this hour.

Before noodle slurping commenced, The Astronomer and I shared two starters. The L.E.S. Bun ($11) paid homage to the restaurant’s neighborhood (the Lower East Side), stuffing pastrami in between steamed buns with karashi mayo and a daikon slaw.

LongHouse Food Revival 2015: Chop Stick Nation

Longhouse Food Revival 2015: Chopstick Nation

I had the pleasure of attending the LongHouse Food Revival this past fall in Upstate New York. Created by Molly O’Neill, this annual gathering has been called the Woodstock of food—an intense day-long symposium designed to raise the bar on how food stories are told and to connect generations of food-inspired artists, writers, and the like.

Every year, LongHouse focuses on a single story to create a multi-media “Pop-Up Food Magazine”. This year’s theme, Chop Stick Nation, explored Chinese American food stories through a variety of mediums including spoken word, film, and live cooking.

Saturday began bright and early with a foraging walk led by Ava Chin at the Huyck Preserve. Autumn in Upstate cannot be beat.

Ava introduced the crowd of mostly city mice to things like garlic mustard, burdock, and wood sorrel. We tasted a bit of this and that as we walked.  (more…)

{swoon} Apple Cider Donuts at Wright’s Farm

Wrights Farms - Gardiner, NY

I hope you don’t mind that I’m writing about one of fall’s most delectable delights on the first day of winter. Seasonality is hardly important when considering apple cider doughnuts this good.

While in upstate New York this past September for an American Chinese food symposium, The Astronomer and I made a pit stop at Wright’s Farm to partake in the quintessential autumn ritual of apple picking, followed by apple cider doughnut eating.  The joys of East Coast living…
