Thanks to The Astronomer’s “alternate work schedule,” every so often we’re able to meet up for a low-key weekday lunch. We stopped into Miàn during its first week of service for a taste of Chongqing-style noodles. Even though the line for a table was longer than anticipated, the food was well worth the wait, especially the dumplings (surprisingly).
Tony Xu, who last dazzled our tastebuds at Chengdu Taste in Alhambra and Rosemead, keeps the hits coming at his second concept Miàn. The restaurant serves just a dozen different mian (noodles), five kinds of chaoshou (dumplings), and eight appetizers.
A complimentary dish of pickled and lightly spiced cabbage arrived at the table to start.
Between the two of us, we shared two noodles and two dumplings. The soupy Gizzard Noodles ($9.99) delivered on all fronts—the noodles were bouncy, the broth was properly numbing, and the gizzards were plentiful.
Mmm… Who can resist a tangle of noodles in a spicy, innards-laced broth? Certainly not me.
Slightly less soupy, but just as savory was the “Chef’s Choice” Chengdu ZaJiang ($8.99) with homemade noodles, ground pork, and green onions.
While the namesake miàn were certainly something, we loved the dumplings most of all. The “Seafood Chaoshou” ($9.99), little parcels in a thick and cloudy seafood broth, delighted with its comforting richness.
Even better were the “Pork Dumplings” ($8.99). Reminiscent of Zhong’s dumplings, the meat-stuffed crescents were served in an absolutely superb garlicky and sweet soy-chili sauce. I’m still thinking about these.
The Astronomer and I both thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Miàn and will definitely return once the lines die down. Mr. Xu’s sophomore effort is just what carb-loving chili heads are craving.
